So sand traps were actually mud holes in stead?
Yes, at least in the equestrian center they were! It seems unbeknownst to us sometime over the past 12 months the horse folk "treated" the soil in their show ring with something to keep it from compacting too much, thus protecting the show horse hoofs. And also acting to retain rainwater, rather than allowing it to run off and the ground to thus dry out. Little did we know when we set up during a sunny day the rains would do what they did. But at least we had a convenient place from which to fish!
